This article addresses the relationship between self-construction and migration in an informal settlement in Batuco, a town located on the outskirts of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, Chile. I use the concepts of self-construction and peripheral urbanization to establish an analytical framework that links this way of city-making with the actions of international migrants, an emerging subject in the literature on informal settlements in Chile. Therefore, the reflections presented in this article interweave elements of traditional forms of self-construction that have been studied in Latin America and Chile with global phenomena present in contemporary migrations. This article is based on an ethnographic approach to the experiences of migrants who self-construct an informal settlement (campamento) in Batuco. The empirical data collected for this task resulted from sustained visits to the campamento over two years as part of my doctoral research, which led to a series of observations and reflections on the dynamics of living.
