Abstract

At present, many of the great lyrical voices achieve greater and earlier successes in Italy, the core of opera, than in their country of origin. This situation is not new, because María Barrientos, the most international Spanish soprano of the first third of the 20th century, who already had visibility and recognition in her native Barcelona when she was very young, only achieved fame and celebrity in her country after having triumphed in the main Italian theatres. How was her precocious international success referenced in Spain? How was the artist received in the following performance held on her country? Through primary and secondary sources, we offer an approach to the singer María Barrientos and we present the circumstances surrounding her first performance in Spain after having triumphed abroad, a fact that coincided with her debut at the Teatro Real of Madrid in 1901.
