Abstract

Despite recent events in the public debate and the media regarding the relationship between science and politics in Chile, the archaeological community has shown limited interest in these discussions. In this paper, we seek to reverse this situation by reflecting on the main scientific policy and investigation promoter institution in the country (Conicyt and the Fondecyt Programme). We will analyse the political conditions that guide and are reproduced by the programme, especially in relation to archaeology. In order to achieve this, we attempt to identify the political dimensions operating within the program. We hope hereby to promote the debate within the archaeological community and to discuss some proposals to think scientific policies, the role of the social sciences and the promotion of a social orientation to Chilean archaeology.
